I saw a film version where it seemed like governess accidentally smothered him to death when she hugged him. It’s ambiguous but possible I suppose. Since it’s a ghost story though, I take it at face value that he was possessed and died from the “exorcism”
Hey, it’s cool you mentioned me by name! I was listening to the last installment at bedtime and BOOM! All of the sudden I hear my name! Ha! Woke me right up. Also, I had never thought about Myles having a crush on a school friend, but I think you’re right. That’s exactly what it is. I’ve honestly always thought that his death was the governess’ fault - that he died of fright because she was pressuring him about this ghost that he might or might not have seen. Anyway, great story and excellent narration!
